18th Century English Oil On Canvas Portrait Of A Gentleman, C.1750 — Unlined Original Georgian Canvas
£750 $1,004 €859
A genuine mid-18th-century English school portrait depicting a gentleman in brown coat and white stock, painted c.1740–1780. Executed in oil on its original hand-woven linen canvas, still on the original Georgian nailed strainer frame (pre-dating keyed stretchers). The painting displays the soft modelling, restrained palette and three-quarter pose characteristic of the Georgian provincial portrait tradition.
The canvas remains unlined with stable age craquelure and even toning. Presented in a later 19th-century veneered frame. Stock number to the top bar is an early gallery or auction inventory mark. A true period portrait of good decorative presence.
Size:
Canvas: 52 × 60 cm
Frame: 67cm high
60.5cm wide
