Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing slope, or lap desk, was a portable wooden box designed to hold writing instruments, ink, and correspondence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. When opened, it unfolded to provide an angled surface for writing while traveling or away from a standard desk.

Victorian writing slopes were typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring figured veneers. They were commonly reinforced with protective brass strapping, brass corner brackets, and lined internally with baize or leather.

Authentic nineteenth-century writing slopes feature hand-cut dovetail joints, flush-fitting brass bindings secured with small screws or pins, and original brass locks. Internal features often include concealed spring-loaded secret compartments behind key drops or inkwell dividers.

A writing slope serves as a functional decorative accent when displayed closed on an executive desk, console table, or library bookshelf. It can also be displayed open to exhibit stationery, calligraphy items, or vintage leather bound books.

Preserve the wood by placing the slope away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent shrinking or veneer lifting. Clean the timber with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste, while gently dusting the brasswork without using harsh chemical polishes.
