Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century walnut tallboy, often configured as a semainier or tall chest, is a vertical case piece featuring multiple stacked drawers designed to maximise storage efficiency while utilising a compact floor footprint. During the 19th century, cabinetmakers frequently applied highly figured burr walnut veneers over oak or pine carcasses, accented with ebonised mouldings and brass hardware.

These chests typically feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, solid wood drawer linings, and hand-applied burr walnut veneers. Architectural elements often include ebonised wood mouldings, turned or bracket feet, and cast brass escutcheons framing steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed secondary timbers on drawer sides and backs, original steel locks with brass escutcheons, and natural shrink gaps in the veneer consistent with age. Smooth, uniform machine-cut dovetails or modern synthetic finishes indicate a later reproduction.

A tall walnut chest provides vertical scale and grain contrast when placed against contemporary painted panelling or neutral walls in modern bedrooms, hallways, or dressing areas. Pairing the timber with minimal brass lighting or structured linen textiles balances the traditional decorative woodwork.

Position the chest away from direct sunlight, radiators, and active heat sources to prevent the wood veneer from drying out or lifting. Clean surfaces using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, wiping along the grain.
