A Victorian period tulipwood and camphor wood davenport from circa 1850.
The writing section pulls forward on brass running guides to sit above the knees, and the top opens to reveal a satinwood interior with space for documents, drawers and one dummy drawer, and, when removing the small handle from this drawer you can then access the side pen and inks drawer which can be removed completely if required.
The lower section has a pair of tooled leather-inset pull out candle or document slides. Most unusually, the graduated drawers face forwards and are not on the side, which is more commonly seen.
Each drawer is fitted with a superb flush brass campaign handle, which like the shaped turned feet and the unusual woods used are very typical of Anglo Chinese export campaign furniture.
The leathers have been replaced at some time.
