Georgian Ash Child's Armchair

18th century
Description

A charming Georgian ash child's armchair; the shaped top rail above a baluster back and swept arms which have been beautifully worn with use; having a rush seat and raised on turned legs terminating in pad feet which are united by turned stretchers. Circa 1740.

This antique child's chair retains a beautifully untouched colour and patina. The wear to the arms is particularly attractive and the patination has brought out the figuring of the ash.

This antique child's armchair is available to view at our London antique shop on Kensington Church Street. We ship worldwide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian vernacular childrens furniture was crafted by regional makers using local hardwoods, designed to elevate children to adult table height with stable proportions and traditional jointing.

Makers commonly used native British hardwoods such as ash, elm, or oak for the timber frame, paired with hand-woven natural rush or timber planking for the seat.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned stretchers, mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, asymmetrical wear patterns from historical use, and natural shrinkage across wood grain.

These elevated seats function well as decorative sculptural accents in hallway corners, living room alcoves, or as standalone display stands for textiles and ceramics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, clean dust with a soft dry brush, and lightly mist natural rush occasionally to maintain flexibility.
