Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after Andre-Charles Boulle, master cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV, Boulle marquetry is a decorative technique inlaying cut brass, pewter, and tortoiseshell into ebonised timber or exotic veneers. Highly prominent in 17th-century France, the style experienced significant revivals during the 19th century under Napoleon III.

These pieces typically feature a carcase constructed from oak or pine coated in ebonised fruitwood veneer, decorated with inlaid sheet brass set into polished tortoiseshell. Sculpted corner embellishments, edge mouldings, and decorative mounts are cast in gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, alongside glass door panels.

Authentic 19th-century Boulle furniture exhibits intricate hand-cut brass scrollwork recessed flush into tortoiseshell, often showing fine hairline stress fractures or slight brass lifting from natural material movement. Ormolu mounts on period examples feature heavy cast bronze with hand-chased reverse surfaces rather than light stamped metal.

A Boulle cabinet functions as a dramatic focal piece when set against modern neutral walls or deep heritage tones in a formal dining room, reception hall, or study. Contrast the complex surface patterning of brass and tortoiseshell by arranging plain ceramics, contemporary glass, or structured book volumes inside the display shelves.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room with stable relative humidity to prevent the brass inlay from separating from the shrinking or expanding tortoiseshell. Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or solvent-based wax cleaners that can damage organic tortoiseshell or original shellac finishes.
