Japanese Kyo-satsuma Silver Art Buckle, Kyoto, C.1890–1915

Description

A superb Kyo-Satsuma buckle produced in Kyoto around 1890–1915, mounted in tested sterling-grade silver. The two domed discs (4.7 cm each) display moonlit cranes in flight above brocaded blossoms, painted in polychrome enamels and richly embellished with raised gold moriage. Fine crackle glaze and exceptional miniature brushwork make this a museum-quality piece.

The silver frame retains its original patina and clasp. One bar was professionally re-soldered in antiquity. Under UV inspection the ceramic panels remain untouched, confirming that no restoration or overpainting has occurred.

This is a classic product of Kyoto’s elite Satsuma workshops, where utilitarian objects were transformed into luxurious art pieces. The buckle can still be worn, though today it is prized primarily as a collectible object of Japanese Meiji craftsmanship.
