Pair of George II Carved Walnut Side Chairs

Description

A superb pair of George II carved walnut side chairs; the serpentine cresting rail with scrolling ears above an interlaced splat beautifully carved with acanthus leaves and a central diamond; having a drop-in seat covered in needlework and raised on cabriole legs which are boldly carved with a cabochon, c scrolls and acanthus leaves and terminate in hairy paw feet.

The carving on this pair of Georgian walnut side chairs is exceptional from the elegance of the interlaced splat to the boldness of the cabochon carving to the knees which unusually hips up into the seat rail which is itself carved with scrolls. The beautiful carving is enhanced by a great colour and patination to the walnut. Circa 1745.
