Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, the chaise longue evolved as a symbol of luxury, designed to allow individuals to recline without retiring to the bedroom. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, revival styles adopted classic French neoclassical proportions, incorporating gilded wood and ornate buttoned upholstery.

Traditional giltwood day beds are constructed with a hardwood frame, typically beech or oak, covered in gold leaf application over a gesso base. The seating surface features webbing, coil springs, and traditional stuffing topped with woven upholstery fabrics such as damask, silk, or heavy cotton.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-carved joinery, fluted tapered legs, and natural wear to the gilding where the underlying bole or gesso shows through. Additionally, construction features such as hand-tied springs, original foot pads, and traditional frame fixings indicate historical age.

A French chaise longue works effectively as an accent seating piece placed at the foot of a bed, within a bay window, or alongside a secondary seating area in a living room. Combining the ornate gilded frame with neutral architectural surroundings creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic detail and modern minimalism.

Giltwood frames require dusting with a dry, soft brush to prevent damage to fragile gold leafing, avoiding water or chemical cleaners entirely. Fabric upholstery should be gently vacuumed with a soft attachment and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and colour fading.
