Description

A finely detailed Kyoto Satsuma bowl from the late Meiji period, likely from the Heian or Hododa workshop. At the centre, a bijin is depicted among children in a tranquil garden beneath a camellia tree, executed in polychrome enamels and gold. The interior features a gilt floral border, while the exterior bears a frieze of irises in soft translucent tones. The removed mark on the base is typical of Kyoto resale pieces.

Satsuma ware originated in the late sixteenth century in Satsuma province, Japan, initially producing simple dark stonewares. During the Meiji period in the late nineteenth century, producers developed cream-coloured earthenware decorated with complex overglaze enamels and gilding tailored specifically for Western export markets.

Satsuma ceramics are made from a low-fired earthenware clay body coated with a clear or ivory-tinted glaze that forms a characteristic fine crackle network. Decorators applied overglaze mineral enamels and liquid gold paste, which were subsequently fired in low-temperature muffle kilns.

Authentic pieces feature a uniform, micro-fine crackle glaze, intricate hand-painted detail, and subtle raised enamel decoration. Many export examples carry maker marks or the Shimazu family crest, depicting a cross within a circle, painted on the base in red or gold.
