Georgian Mahogany Oval Butlers Tray on Stand

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality George III Period Late 18th Century Mahogany Oval Butlers Tray, Of Typical Four Panel Construction, With Original Brass Hinges To Folding Sides With Pierced Carrying Handles, Raised On Later Square Tapered Leg Stand.

During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards.

Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times.

Therefore as is now normal with by far the majority of these butlers trays which we see, due to the fact they make absolutely perfect coffee tables, this has been removed from its original, tall, folding stand at some point and fitted onto a lower, more practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It’s worth noting that generally this means an old broken table, or something similar which was destined for the scrapheap or bonfire, has therefore also been recycled and re-purposed.

As with all items which we offer for sale this antique coffee table has received a thorough inspection and natural wax polish by our traditional antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale, ensuring that it is in the best, most presentable, retail showroom condition. Overall the condition is good, it retains a nice warm colour and good surface and is very much ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed in the 18th century, a butler tray table consists of a removable or hinged tray placed atop a portable or fixed stand, used by domestic staff to transport and serve refreshments.

Authentic 18th and early 19th-century examples are primarily constructed from solid mahogany, featuring brass flush hinges and cut-out carry handles on the folding flaps.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass straps or hinges with hand-slotted screws, hand-carved hand-holds, and natural patina or signs of historical wear on the timber.

Position the table as a compact coffee table, end table, or dedicated drinks station in a living space, dressed with a decanter, crystal glassware, or art books.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
