Description

A very lovely early Derby porcelain plate/dish of unusual shape with curved, raised scalloped rim and double stepped cavetto. Beautifully painted with finely detailed ornate floral sprays by the "cotton-stem painter" and finished with a brown-red rim. Unmarked, c.1760-1765.

Provenance: Dennis G. Rice Collection.

It measures 16.2cm (6 3/8") wide and 2.5cm (1") high.

Condition is very good; there is a very small rim chip that has been retouched (see final photographs) and several firing cracks to the edge, a couple of which extend as short glaze lines. One of these firing cracks was a bit wider and has been filled, neatly and clearly professionally. Minor handling wear, the enamels are lovely and bright with no discernible rubbing.

Derby porcelain refers to soft-paste ceramics produced at the Derby factory in England, established around 1750. Early production featured botanical motifs, translucent bodies, and refined hand-painted enamelling executed by distinct decorated hands such as the Cotton Stem painter.

Early English porcelain was composed of soft-paste bodies containing ingredients like pipe clay, white sand, and glass frit, or bone ash. These were decorated using overglaze enamel pigments and fired multiple times to set the colors.

Authentic pieces often exhibit unglazed circular patch marks on the underside from the kiln supports, a warm translucent body when held to light, and characteristic lobed or scalloped rims painted with an iron-red or brown line.

Display the plate upright on an acrylic or brass stand on a sideboard top, arrange it in a glass cabinet alongside monochrome glassware, or mount a grouping on a wall space to create a traditional focal point.
