Gents 1950s Minerva Doctor’s Chronograph Wrist Watch

Gents 1950s Minerva doctor’s chronograph wrist watch.

The watch has a 17-jewel Venus 188 hand-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 37mm diameter excluding the winding crown, buttons and lugs. The case is gold plated while the case back is stainless steel. There is a little wear and marking to the plate and some scratching to the case back.

The lens is in good condition (some reflection showing in the photo).

The signed dial has been refinished over the years, /the two subsidiary dials are in the original copper coloured finish. The sub dial at the 3 o’clock position records up to 30 minutes (including the markers at three, six and nine minutes. These were aimed at the business man who made international telephone calls which were very expensive at the time. The calls were rounded to chargeable chunks of three minutes and so watch making companies came up with this scale to help people control their talking duration). The other sub dial is for constant seconds.

The perimeter of the dial has a pulse scale, "base 30 pulsations"… this refers to the watch being calibrated to 30 pulses which means that when you check someone's heart rate, you start counting the beats as soon as you start the chrono. After you count 30 pulses, you stop the chrono and look to see where the chrono hand points to, that will give you the Pulse rate in beats/minute.

A later leather strap has been fitted.
