Pair of Hododa (????) Satsuma Vases with Shimazu Mon — Exhibition Quality, C. 1895–1915

Description

A superb matched pair of Japanese Satsuma vases by Hododa (????), Yokohama, late Meiji to early Taisho. Thin-walled ivory-toned bodies with fine craquelure are densely decorated in overglaze enamels and sumptuous kinrande gold.

Scenes alternate between mandarin ducks and songbirds among blossom and cranes by the water before misted peaks, unified by textile-pattern gilt bands scattered with mon. The brushwork is crisp, the colour layering deep, and the gilding exquisitely controlled — true exhibition-grade work from Japan’s Yokohama export ateliers.

Undersides show the Shimazu crest above the Hododa gilt cartouche (one clear, one rubbed).

Condition

Excellent. Enamels and gold are bright and unworn. One footrim has a tiny filled touch to an old nibble, invisible on display. No cracks or repairs under UV. Old collection letters fluoresce under UV.

Satsuma pottery originated in the Satsuma province of southern Japan during the late sixteenth century. Originally plain and dark, the style evolved into finely detailed, cream-coloured earthenware adorned with enamels and gilding, becoming a major Japanese export art form during the Meiji period.

Satsuma ceramics are formed from low-fired earthenware characterised by a finely crazed cream glaze. Artisans apply polychrome overglaze enamels and gold leaf by hand, often firing the piece multiple times to set complex layered patterns.
