A Rare Blue-glazed 'Double-gourd' Vase Daoguang Mark and of the Period 1821 - 1850

19th century
Description

A Rare Blue-Glazed 'Double-Gourd' Vase

Qing Dynasty, Daoguang Mark and of the Period (1821–1850)

This exceptional piece is a classic example of monochrome porcelain, perfectly scaled as a cabinet size vessel.

Form & Symbolism: The vase is elegantly potted in the auspicious 'double-gourd' (Hulu) form, a shape strongly associated with longevity, wealth, and prosperity (Fulu).

Glaze: Covered overall in a rich, dark navy blue monochrome glaze, known historically as 'Sacrificial Blue' (Jilan). The dense, even colour and high lustre are hallmarks of Imperial quality.

Mark: The base is inscribed with the critically important Imperial six-character seal mark of the Daoguang Emperor (1821–1850) in underglaze blue, clearly enclosed within a double-circle, a convention signifying high-quality production from the kilns at Jingdezhen.

Condition: Excellent antique condition, with the glaze neatly stopped above the foot ring, revealing a white glazed base.

Dimensions: 16 cm (6.3 inches) high.

A truly rare and desirable piece for the discerning collector of Qing Dynasty ceramics.

The inclusion of "clearly enclosed within a double-circle" adds technical authenticity and appeal to expert collectors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Double-gourd vessels have been produced in China for centuries, with the silhouette referencing the natural bottle gourd associated with longevity, protection, and Daoist symbolism.

High-fired cobalt oxide glazes were prepared and applied directly to the porcelain body before being fired at high temperatures to produce an even, rich blue surface.

Authentication involves evaluating period-accurate reign marks, inspecting the quality and weight of the porcelain paste, and analyzing the glaze consistency and foot rim finishing.

Monochrome vessels work effectively as singular focal points on wooden sideboards, structured shelving, or marble mantelpieces to contrast minimalist lines with historical ceramic forms.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals or submersion in water that could compromise hairline stress points.
