Victorian E. Hipkins & Co Safe
Antique E. Hipkins & co. Luxury safe - Fully restored to showroom condition.
We proudly present this very rare and exceptionally magnificent E. Hipkins & Co. Bent Corner Safe, now in stunning, fully restored condition. Originating from the renowned Kateshill Works in Dudley, a famous hub of the industrial Black Country, this safe was crafted during the late-Victorian period (C1880). Hipkins was a highly regarded regional manufacturer, specialising in steel plate safes primarily marketed as ''Fire Resisting''. This fully restored piece is a unique collector''s item, offering an unparalleled blend of security, history, and exquisite luxury finish, now offered in genuinely magnificent, museum-quality condition.
This bespoke luxury safe has been fully restored from bare metal, having been stripped and linished to ensure the highest quality refurbishment possible. The safe is predominantly painted in a beautiful, high-gloss Dark Green featuring a Blac
...k frame, which perfectly complements the gold leaf effect pinstripes and coach lines that skilfully embellish the door and hinges. The safe has then been carefully polished and waxed to protect the paintwork and give a beautiful high-gloss sheen, with all brasswork meticulously polished to match.
The safe is instantly identified and authenticated by its pristine, highly polished, original brass plaque, proudly displaying the maker''s name and place of manufacture complete with the Three Lions crest. The safe also retains its original solid polished brass handle which operates the bolts; the mechanism reminds us of a bolt-action rifle as its action is solid and has a satisfying latching action in a smoothly working order. The external lock and locking mechanism have been fully serviced and are working smoothly with 2 keys. The keyhole escutcheon has a lovely dovetailed sliding brass cover, protecting the lock from any dirt or debris.
Opening the heavy door reveals a stunning contrast: the interior chamber is finished in a vibrant, period-correct muted turquoise, embellished with original red pinstripes and accents. It proudly features its original E. Hipkins & Co. internal transfer, confirming its fire resistance. The safe is complete with a useful, secure jewellery drawer which has its own working brass lever lock and keys (2) and is fitted with its original polished brass dropper handle. To match the red internal accents, our upholstery department has made high quality red full grain leather removable liners to keep your valuables and the safe itself protected from scratches or damage when items are stored inside. We have also included an automatic LED light inside the safe which comes on when the door is opened or detects movement. The light is easily removed, has a long life Li-ion battery, and is charged simply via USB.
To enhance its functionality and appeal, we have also bespoke made a solid pine stand/plinth for the safe to sit on (finished in an antique pine stain). This plinth is specifically designed not only to protect your flooring, but also to raise the safe to a perfect lamp table height, preventing accidental knocks from foot traffic or damage from vacuum cleaners.
This E. Hipkins safe is the perfect secure addition to any discerning home, office, or retail space, offering an unparalleled blend of history, security, and exquisite, luxury finish, and will certainly be an interesting talking point for guests. It is ideal for storing important paperwork, house deeds, passports, cash, or jewellery, and is obviously very safe, powder, and theft-proof. The safe is also available without the stand should you not require the plinth.
Please note: While in excellent restored condition, as an antique, this item may naturally have the odd minor blemish or scuff, which we feel only adds to its charm and authenticity. Given the substantial weight of this safe, we recommend protecting your flooring underneath. All of our restored safes are co
