Late 18th Century Mahogany Folding Dumbwaiter

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Folding Dumb Waiter Having

Two Well Figured Circular Tiers United By Gun Barrel Turned Centre Column

Terminating On Elegant Tripod Legs With Original Brass Castors

( Antique dumb waiters, sometimes referred to as buffet’s were made to be used

in a dining room for storing the food about to be served. Often the dumb waiters

made in pairs for large houses and they appear to have first started being used

around the mid 19th century. After dinner, when the ladies retired to a different

room the dumb waiters would be placed at either end of the table laden with drink

so that the gentlemen could help themselves easily enough throughout the rest

of the evening. This example is particularly unusual with its folding sides allowing

it to be used in such a huge variety of different places around the modern home

without sacrificing a huge amount of real estate so to speak.)

Circa 1790

Height – 36in

Top Tier – Flaps Up Diameter 18in, Flaps Down 4.25in x 18in

Bottom Tier – Flaps Up Diameter 23.5in, Flaps Down 5.25in x 23.5in

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in eighteenth-century Britain, a dumbwaiter is a multi-tiered table designed to hold condiments, food, and wine during meals. Its purpose was to allow diners to serve themselves, reducing the need for domestic servants in the dining room and ensuring privacy during conversations.

Late eighteenth-century dumbwaiters were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain. The fittings, including hinges, collar rings, and castors on the tripod legs, were typically made of cast brass.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-turned central columns, drop-leaf or folding circular tiers with original iron or brass mechanisms, and hand-dovetailed or hand-carved tripod legs. Hand-cut brass castors and evidence of natural age-related patination also indicate authenticity.

In modern settings, a dumbwaiter functions as a versatile tiered side table or drinks stand. Placed in a corner or beside seating, it can hold books, ceramics, or indoor plants, adding historic character and height to contemporary spaces.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Protect the surface from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and moisture to prevent shrinkage or finish deterioration.
