FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced around the Arita region, historically shipped from the port of Imari. Characterised by rich underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and enamelled floral detailing, it gained widespread popularity across Europe from the late seventeenth century onwards.

Imari chargers are crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay and fired at high temperatures. The distinct visual style is achieved using underglaze cobalt blue painting, followed by a secondary firing with overglaze enamels in iron red, orange, green, and occasionally gilded accents.

Authentic Imari pieces from the late Meiji to early Taisho periods typically exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight natural irregularities, panelled floral borders, a scalloped rim, and characteristic firing marks or minor pinholes in the glaze on the underside.

An Imari charger can be placed on a display stand atop a dark wood sideboard, or wall-mounted as part of a curated ceramic gallery wall. The contrast of cobalt and terracotta provides historical depth within contemporary and traditional interiors.

Clean gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth with plain water. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical detergents, or soaking the object in water, as harsh treatments can wear down the surface overglaze enamels.
