Circa 1900 Taylor's Dressmaker's Mannequin Bust

1900 - 1920
Description

This antique French dressmaker's mannequin dates from the turn of the 19th to 20th century.

The body is wrapped in linen that has developed a patina over time; the fabric remains intact aside from the anticipated stains and halos associated with age and careful handling, which harmoniously integrate with the overall aged appearance.

While originally accompanied by a stand, this element is no longer present.

The mannequin reflects the fashionable silhouette of its era, characterised by a slightly compressed bust, a narrow waist sometimes even narrower (wasp waisted), and a subtly accentuated posterior.

This piece presents an attractive decorative option suitable for shop displays as well as in a chic boudoir interior.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dressmakers mannequin busts became essential tools in tailor shops and couture houses during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Designed to replicate the human proportions of the era, they allowed dressmakers to drape, pin, and construct garments accurately.

Traditional mannequin busts were built using a core of molded papier-mache or lightweight wood, padded with wadding, and covered tightly in linen or cotton canvas. They often featured turned wooden or cast metal neck caps and shoulder mounts.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 feature period-accurate proportions, such as an exaggerated hourglass or S-bend silhouette. Look for hand-stitched seams, aged patina on the fabric cover, stamp marks from original manufacturers, and wooden end caps.

An antique mannequin bust serves as a sculpted accent piece when placed atop a sideboard, console table, or within a dressing room. It can be displayed unadorned to showcase its historic form or used to drape vintage textiles and jewellery.

Keep the mannequin in a dry climate controlled environment away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric dry rot and fading. Clean gently using a soft brush or low-suction vacuum with a mesh cover to remove dust without damaging vintage fibres.
