Pair of Pâte-sur-pâte Porcelain Lamps with Gilt Bronze Mounts, Late 19th Cent. French

19th century
Description

Elegant pair of pâte-sur-pâte porcelain table lamps featuring soft celadon green bodies adorned with delicate white floral motifs in raised relief on both sides. Each lamp showcases exquisite craftsmanship, with intricate pâte-sur-pâte decoration depicting flora and foliage, offering a refined and translucent three-dimensional effect.

The porcelain bases rest on ornate gilt bronze (ormolu) stands with scrolling acanthus leaf details and matching decorative collars at the top. The combination of the smooth porcelain finish and rich golden accents creates a timeless and luxurious look suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors.

A stunning and sophisticated pair—perfect for collectors or as statement lighting in an elegant living space.

Pâte-sur-pâte is a French term meaning "paste on paste". It is a method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired, unglazed body, usually with a coloured body, by applying successive layers of (usually) white porcelain slip (liquid clay) with a brush. Once the main shape is built up, it is carved away to give fine detail, before the piece is fired. The work is very painstaking and may take weeks of adding extra layers and allowing them to harden before the next is applied

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pate-sur-pate, translating to paste-on-paste, is a French ceramic decoration technique developed in the mid-19th century where translucent white liquid clay slip is built up in successive layers onto a coloured porcelain body to build a low-relief design.

These pieces typically feature a hard-paste porcelain vessel decorated with slip relief, fitted onto cast and chased gilt bronze (ormolu) bases and collars, which provided physical stability and protection to the foot of the ceramic.

Authentic examples exhibit varied translucency and delicate depth in the white slip work, crisp chasing on the gilt bronze mounts, and age-appropriate surface oxidisation to the metalwork underneath.

Positioned as a symmetrical pair on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece, their soft celadon tones and classical bronze mounts add texture and historical contrast to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Clean the ceramic surface gently using a soft dry microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals or water immersion that could damage electrical components or tarnish the gilt bronze mounts.
