Antique Caucasian Shirvan Runner (Fragment)

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

Despite being woven in the late 19th Century, this Shirvan runner retains its joyous appearance. This is mainly due to the longevity of the natural dyes, that have gracefully saturated over to time produce the distinctive blue and red hexagons on the border, that cover the rug like bunting. As we move towards the centre, the deep cerulean hue becomes prevalent, adding a layer of depth to the traditional motifs which it displays, such as the latched-hook medallions and the hand-drawn flowers. Overall, worn , patched repaired adds a layer of character to this runner.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shirvan rugs originate from the southeastern Caucasus, renowned for their fine hand-knotted wool construction, geometric medallions, and rich natural dye palettes.

Traditionally, these rugs feature hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured using plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied knots, subtle colour variations known as abrash, and complex geometric motifs typical of tribal Caucasian weavers.

A tribal runner introduces rich texture and colour to neutral hallways, entryways, or open-plan spaces, contrasting effectively with modern minimalism or complementing classic wooden flooring.

Vacuum gently without a rotary beater bar, use a high-quality underlay to prevent sliding and wear, and treat spills immediately by blotting with cold water and mild soap.
