Monumental French Wine Ewer, Choisy-le-roi or Sarreguemines, C.1875–1895

Description

A grand glazed earthenware ewer of impressive 50 cm height, combining relief modelling with naturalistic painting. The lid is formed as a boar’s head, the handle as a ram’s head, and the spout as a satyr mascaron. Between the gilt vine friezes, a marsh-bird panel demonstrates refined hand-painting typical of Choisy-le-Roi or Sarreguemines around 1880–1890.

During the late nineteenth century, French manufactories such as Choisy-le-Roi and Sarreguemines produced elaborate decorative ewers influenced by classical shapes and nature motifs. These vessels served both functional dining roles and as prominent decorative display pieces in affluent homes.

These pieces were typically cast from fine earthenware or majolica clay, fired, and finished with lead-based glazes. Decorative elements were added through molded relief, hand-painted enamel illustrations, and delicate gold leaf gilding.
