Set of 10 Regency Period Rosewood Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

An Exceptionally Good Quality Early 19th Century Regency Period Rosewood Set Of 10 Dining Chairs, Or Side Chairs, Having Superbly Figured Shaped Top Rails With Superb Richly Carved Foliate Decoration, Over Bold Removable Stuffover Seat Pads Featuring Attractive Floral Needlepoint Decoration, Raised On Elegant Turned Tapering Legs, Headed By Attractive Tulip Carved Decoration.

This beautiful set of dining chairs were clearly made in one of the top London cabinet making workshops of the early 19th century, boasting wonderfully rich rosewood timbers and a depth of carving rarely found. They are also remarkably sturdy and fit for purpose, which often isn't the case of course for sets of regency dining chairs, many of which can have a tendency to be a little small. These chairs are anything but that, boasting impressive comfortable seats which any person of any size can sit on and be happy

Its unusual to find sets of 10 or more chairs which are still in good condition and haven't had modern additional chairs built into the set when others in the set become damaged over the years, so thats another big tick in the box of these lovely chairs.

Overall the condition is very good with just a few minor, historic repairs, old marks and scratches as one would expect to find on items of this age. There is no major structural defects or issues to speak of and that is always something which is nice to find on antique dining chairs.

The chairs have also been covered individually not that long ago in striking cream fabric with lovely needlepoint decoration to each individual chair. Clearly somebody somewhere has spent many, many hours making these seats and must have been very happy with their work. It is worth noting that there are a just a few small old marks and stains to the fabric, however nothing overly obvious without close inspection and actually with careful knowhow then they could possibly even be removed. We have made sure that any marks to the upholstery are clearly visble in the closeup photos of the seats. Another point worth noting however is that despite the seats being of the larger stuffover variety they can still be very easily removed from the chairs should purchaser which to change the fabric for something of their own taste and choice at relatively low cost.

As with all items which we offer for sale these chairs have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained specialist antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that they are in their best possible condition before being offered for sale.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period dining chairs, popular in Britain from roughly 1811 to 1830, are defined by Neoclassical design influences, classical proportions, carved crest rails, scrolled mid-rails, and turned or reeded legs.

Craftsmen during the Regency era favoured fine dark hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, frequently paired with brass inlays, drop-in padded seats, and detailed hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentic Regency chairs typically feature period joinery such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, original natural timber grain, sabre back legs, and carved features like rosettes or scrollwork.

Regency rosewood chairs can be arranged around a sleek modern dining table to create visual contrast, or placed alongside a contemporary sideboard to highlight the rich timber grain in a contemporary setting.

Rosewood furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration. Applying beeswax periodically helps preserve the finish.
