Antique Fereghan Sarouk Village Rug - Mid 19th Century

19th century
For Sale by Siez Gallery
Description

This rug has a well known traditional design that originates from the region of Arak. Despite displaying so many intricate features, it is the large Jewel-shaped medallion in the centre that first captures the attention. Its naive design suggests it was made in a village of this region, and its this very thing that gives it its sublime character. surrounded by a dark indigo shadow that appears to be a silhouette, indicative of a Persian night sky, whist the sheer abundance of leaves, flower heads and interconnected vines make it easy to get lost in this remarkable scene with a gorgeous saturated colour palette. It shows various signs of abrash and other imperfections, but this only adds to its presence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fereghan Sarouk rugs originate from the Arak region of central Persia, crafted predominantly during the nineteenth century. They are known for combining botanical motifs, natural vegetable dyes, fine wool pile, and structured medallion designs.

These rugs were woven using hand-spun wool knotted onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation. Artisans employed natural dyes derived from madder root, indigo, walnut husks, and pomegranate rinds to produce their rich colour palettes.

Authentic examples feature asymmetrical Persian knots, soft colour tones with natural abrash shade variations, and a dense wool pile with a flexible feel. The reverse side shows clear, precise knotting consistent with hand weaving.

A traditional patterned rug anchors contemporary rooms by providing texture, depth, and geometric interest. It contrasts effectively with clean-lined modern furniture, timber floorboards, or neutral upholstery schemes.

Vacuum gently using suction only to avoid catching or damaging delicate pile fibres. Rotate the carpet periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure, and use specialist professional cleaning services when deep cleaning is required.
