Antique Leather Officer's Travel Trunk 53cm by Drew & Sons C 1880

19th century
Description

Beautiful and unusual antique leather officer's trunk, 53 cm wide and in excellent original condition, and dating from c 1880.

It is stamped with the maker Drew & Sons who retailed top quality items of luggage from their premises in Piccadilly Circus in the late 19th Century, where they were makers to the Royal Family.

This trunk shows wonderful signs of use and travel, but there is no damage, just a few marks and odd pieces of travel labels.

Inside there is a separate tray with a lid that folds back to reveal sections for various items and when you remove the tray there is space below for a pair of leather boots.

The handle is good and strong, the solid brass locks spring perfectly, and all round this is a superior piece of antique luggage that is perfectly usable today, or maybe it should just be admired.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, military officers and affluent travellers used reinforced leather trunks to secure clothing and personal equipment during long voyages and campaigns.

These trunks were constructed from thick, hand-stitched hide leather over a rigid frame, fitted with heavy brass lever locks and reinforced carrying handles.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-stitched seams, heavy patinated brass hardware often stamped by makers, and natural wear or historical travel labels.

A leather travel case functions well as a decorative accent on a console table, stacked within a library display, or placed upon a sideboard top.

Keep the leather away from direct heat sources and apply specialised leather wax or conditioner sparingly to prevent cracking while preserving the natural patina.
