Rare Derby Porcelain Candlestick Figures “Ranelagh Dancers” — Complete Georgian Pair with Sconces, C.1760

Description

A rare and elegant Derby pair identified as the Ranelagh Dancers (Bradshaw, E17, pp. 97–98, fig. 75). Produced circa 1759–69 in response to the celebrated masquerade at Ranelagh Gardens (24 May 1759). Derby appears to have made only this specific paired subject. Poised modelling, expressive heads, richly painted costumes and applied bocage typify Derby’s finest work of the 1760s. Intended as dessert-table ornaments signifying cultivated taste.

That museum example lacks the upper flower sconce; the present pair retains both sconces, a survival rarely encountered.

Condition

A handsome, coherent pair with excellent presence. Male: historic pin securing upper socket; small chip to hat feathers; minor fritting and tiny bocage losses; minute firing line to cloak. Female: historic re-join to branch with old metal fitting; chip to hat bow; occasional frits and pin-head firing lines; slight roughness to left palm. UV: no visible cracks, overpaint or restoration. Overall excellent antique condition.
