Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italianate landscape paintings were created by Northern European and Italian artists depicting the Roman countryside and pastoral motifs. These works feature warm golden lighting, classical architecture or stone structures, and figures engaged in outdoor activities, reflecting the influence of the Grand Tour.

Paintings from this era were rendered using hand-ground mineral and earth pigments mixed with linseed oil, applied to stretched linen canvas. Frames were typically handcrafted from carved timber and finished using traditional gesso and water gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation and darkening of the canvas timber stretchers, and traditional joinery on the frame. The reverse of the canvas often exhibits historical patina and minor surface wear commensurate with age.

Classical landscape paintings function as effective focal points when mounted above sideboards, mantelpieces, or console tables. Hanging gilded framed artwork alongside contemporary clean-lined furniture creates a curated, layered aesthetic.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, moisture, and fluctuating heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, and avoid applying water or chemical cleaners to the canvas surface or gilded finish.
