Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian partners desk is constructed to allow two people to work facing each other, featuring drawers or cupboards on opposite sides. Originating in nineteenth-century Britain, these large mahogany or oak tables were standard in commercial offices, banking halls, and private library rooms.

Nineteenth-century writing desks were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, with veneer panels used for decorative graining. Writing surfaces were routinely inlaid with gold-tooled leather, supported by turned or carved legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, period brass locks, and original stamped brass castors. The underside of the frame and drawer linings generally feature secondary timbers such as pine, ash, or oak.

A large mahogany writing desk functions as an anchor piece in a contemporary study or home office when paired with modern leather seating and neutral backdrop colours. It can also serve as a substantial central desk within an open-plan room layout.

Timber surfaces should be dusted with a dry cloth and treated with beeswax periodically to preserve the patina. Leather surfaces require protection from direct sunlight and heat sources, along with occasional cleaning using a specialised leather cream.
