Sherwin & Cotton Victorian Ceramic Tile “Lady with Ewer”, C.1890

Description

Attractive English fireplace tile by Sherwin & Cotton, Hanley, c.1890. Earthenware with warm mustard glaze; the classical lady with ewer is modelled in delicate sepia tones using the firm’s celebrated transfer process that gives a soft photographic depth. Small “G” initial at the lower left (decorator’s mark). Reverse with expected remnants of original plaster bedding from a surround.

Excellent period condition; UV-checked with no cracks, chips, overpainting or repairs. Minor, honest evidence of former installation to the reverse only. A fine, decorative example ready to place.
