Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
In reality, it is a cleverly constructed desk stationery box of generous scale and proportion.

The box secretly opens from the centre line of the book's front binding and hinges back from the top to reveal a wonderfully colourful interior which is divided into four graduated compartments, and each section is covered in decorative hand marbled papers finished with red leather edging which matches the red suede lining to the underside of the box to protect polished surfaces.
The box is a genuine work of art and is in remarkable condition, showing very little signs of wear or fading.
