We are delighted to offer this fine quality antique Dutch solid silver bowl made in Amsterdam during the 18th century, probably c.1740-1770.
The bowl is made from a very good gauge of silver and, whilst difficult to convey through photos, when held in hand, it has a very heavy and reassuring feel of quality wrought silver of the 18th century.
The bowl is raised on three very sturdy scrolled feet and features a wonderful gallery of pierced motifs. The piercing has been hand-finished and is a testament to its fine craftsmanship and labourious efforts that would have gone into making a single piece. The top section features a beautiful quatrefoil-like design with borders of multiple heights.
The interior of the bowl is gilded and remains in a light antique lemon gilt tone.
Such bowls were originally intended as pipe lighters/braziers/stoves in the 18th century, before matches were invented. Hot embers would be brought and placed within to allow pipe smokers to light their ...tobacco. However, owing to its versatile size and design, we believe it has further potential even in the modern day with some creativity.
Whether it be to hold some confectionery, nuts, berries or perhaps taking inspiration from its roots and as an opulent ashtray, this bowl would grace an interior setting and elevate its ambience.
18th-century Dutch hallmarks are present with the town assay mark for Amsterdam. Some of the marks are rubbed.
