Originating from the Arita region and exported through the port of Imari in Japan, Imari porcelain gained international prominence from the seventeenth century onwards, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red hand-painted decoration.

These chargers are constructed from high-fired kaolin porcelain, utilizing an underglaze cobalt blue technique followed by secondary enamelling in iron-red and detailed overglaze hand painting.

Authentic pieces frequently display spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, minor variations consistent with hand-painted execution, translucency in the ceramic body, and traditional panelled cartouche layouts.
