Arita (Hizen) Aka-e Porcelain Dish, Late 17th Century (C.1680–1700)

Description

A finely potted Arita porcelain dish from the closing decades of the 17th century, painted in the refined aka-e palette of iron-red, copper-green and yellow enamels on a brilliant white ground. The design features a chrysanthemum rosette within concentric bands, the cavetto framed by a red register of stylised clouds and the rim encircled by a scrolling leaf garland with red roundels.

The thin, resonant porcelain (344 g at 24.5 cm) and the knife-shaved, unglazed foot with kiln grit identify it as early Hizen work. The absence of gilt and controlled brushwork align the dish with the restrained aesthetic that preceded full Kakiemon polychromy.

Condition

Outstanding for its age. UV-clean: no restoration, no repaint. Only honest wear to the foot and light surface rubbing.
