Minton Pair of Parian Biscuit Figures “The Gardeners”, C.1845

Description

A rare and finely modelled Parian pair by Minton & Co., Stoke-on-Trent. The youth offers fruit from a basket to the flower-gathering girl. Greek-key circular bases; unglazed Parian body with crisp detail, typical of early Minton production around 1845. Unmarked—as frequently seen on early Parian.

Measurements

Male: Height 19.5 cm; width 10 cm; depth 10 cm; weight 332 g

Female: Height 19.3 cm; width 8 cm; depth 7.5 cm; weight 271 g

Condition

Male: minor fingertip losses; small chips to fruit leaves; possible professional restoration to hands.

Female: apron with flowers restored and re-glued; repaired left elbow; reattached flower to hem; otherwise excellent antique condition with no cracks or structural losses.

A desirable early Parian pair reflecting the Victorian pastoral ideal and Minton’s leadership in Parian sculpture.
