An outstanding antique Malayer runner, handwoven circa 1900. The design features three large pistachio green Herati medallions on a deep indigo field of linked Botehs. Lovely wool quality and great secondary colours.

Size: 4.25m x 0.96m (13ft 11in x 3ft 2in)

This rug is in good condition with light, age-related wear. Fringes and selvages are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Malayer rugs originate from the village of Malayer in western Iran, south of Hamadan. Woven during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these carpets are characterised by single-weft construction, diverse geometric or curvilinear medallion designs, and natural dye palettes.

Traditional Malayer runners feature a hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton warp and weft foundation. The wool was dyed using vegetable and plant-based dyes, producing deep navy, madder red, and cream tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variations in dye colour, known as abrash, alongside irregular weave density characteristic of hand-loomed textiles. The back of the rug will mirror the front design clearly without synthetic backing material.

Long runners are designed to anchor entrance hallways, long corridors, or narrow landings. They pair effectively with polished timber flooring, stone flags, or neutral painted skirting boards to add warmth and geometric contrast.
