Description

An exquisitely hand-painted miniature incense burner (koro) from the celebrated Kyoto workshop Kotobuki-do (mark ??). The squat, tripod form with short spout and loop handles is enamelled in polychrome and rich gilt with trailing wisteria, chrysanthemums and a songbird among flowering branches, all executed with microscopic precision. The warm ivory glaze shows the fine craquelure typical of Kyoto Satsuma. Original lid present and professionally rejoined in two places; gentle age-rubbing to gilt only.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery that originated in the Satsuma province during the sixteenth century. It gained widespread popularity during the Meiji period (18681912), when workshops began producing heavily gilded and enamelled pieces specifically designed for export to Western markets.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from a light-coloured earthenware clay finished with a clear lead glaze that develops a characteristic fine crackle pattern, known as kannyu. Decorations are applied over the glaze using polychrome enamel pigments and gold leaf or gold paint.

Authentic pieces generally display a distinct yellowish-cream earthenware body covered in fine glaze crackle rather than smooth porcelain. They frequently feature maker or studio marks painted in red or gold on the base, complex hand-painted enamel decoration, and deliberate gilding around rims or handles.

Small ceramic objects like Satsuma burners function well as decorative accents on wooden bookshelves, sideboards, or mantelpieces. Placing them alongside neutral modern textures creates a balanced visual contrast while highlighting the detailed painted patterns.
