Description

A large Longquan celadon dish dating to the late Yuan dynasty (14th century). Made in a dense stoneware body and covered in a clear bluish-green glaze, the surface shows a molded floral scroll surrounding a trellis-centre with radiating petals. The wide unglazed footring fired to a warm orange tone, abundant pinholes to the base, and pooled glaze are all characteristic of Yuan Longquan ware.

Condition

Longquan celadon ceramics are high-fired Chinese stonewares produced in Zhejiang province, recognisable by their thick, lime-alkali glazes that range from olive green to sea green. During the Yuan dynasty, production scaled up significantly for export, featuring heavier potted forms and decorative techniques such as moulding, carving, and applique under the glaze.

The iconic green hue of celadon is achieved by applying a glaze containing small amounts of iron oxide, which is fired in a reduction atmosphere within wood-burning dragon kilns. The interaction between the iron, low oxygen levels, and thick translucent glaze layers creates the soft jade-like tone and characteristic depth.

Authentic Yuan pieces typically display a thick stoneware body with an unglazed firing ring on the base that oxidises to a reddish-orange colour during cooling. The glaze often exhibits natural micro-bubbles, gentle crackle patterns, and heavy pooling where carved or moulded relief decoration meets the flat surface.

A large ceramic charger can be styled upright on a wooden or brass acrylic stand atop a sideboard, console table, or inside a glass display cabinet. It can also be mounted securely on a wall using a specialised wire plate hanger to serve as focal art in a minimal interior.
