A very good example of an 18thc steel ''gentleman''s'' snuff box....it is engraved JS and dated 1797...clearly visible, but of course well rubbed from constant use....the box is in nice condition with a very fine quality hinge and although it has lost the little button you press to open, it closes well and opens well as the opening mechanism is still in place and works.
