Samson, Paris — Porcelain Figure of a Leopard, Mid-19th Century

Description

A fine Samson, Paris hard-paste porcelain figure of a recumbent leopard, c.1850–1860, after the famous 18th-century model by Johann Joachim Kändler for Meissen.

The leopard reclines with head raised, forepaws together and tail curled along the back. Naturalistic enamels capture the dappled white coat with irregular black rosettes; muzzle, ears and paws softly shaded brown; bright yellow eyes with black pupils.

The underside shows two vent holes and early firing traces.

A blue crossed-lines mark appears on the rump, a device used by Samson on their best interpretations of important European models.
