Japanese Satsuma Tea Jar, Tokyo Taizan, Meiji C.1890, Rakan & Gold

19th century
Description

A superb Japanese Satsuma tea jar from the Tokyo studio of Taizan, dating to the Meiji period circa 1890. This refined vessel features a circular procession of rakan figures beneath bamboo groves, masterfully painted in polychrome enamels and lavish gold. The moriage relief is delicately raised and precise. The imperial mon crowns the lid, with the original inner cover present. Finial absent, two short glaze hairlines, rim nicks; no cracks, no repaint.

The underside bears a rare Tokyo-style signature in red and gold: Dai Nippon / Bijutsuhin / Satsuma-style famous ware / made by Master Taizan. This differentiates it from the Kyoto Taizan works and aligns it with examples known from Bonhams and Christie's.

A striking spiritual work of Japanese export artistry with strong decorative and collector value.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma province, Japan, evolving during the Meiji period (18681912) into decorated earthenware created largely for export. Characterised by intricate overglaze enamels and gilding on a light cream ground, these items frequently depicted scholars, deities, and natural landscapes.

Satsuma tea jars were potted from low-fired earthenware featuring a characteristic finely crazed glaze. Craftsmen applied delicate polychrome enamels and gold leaf by hand, firing the pieces multiple times to fix the detailed figures and patterns.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct ivory-coloured body with a fine, uniform crackle glaze beneath detailed polychrome enamelling and heavy gilding. Maker marks, painted or impressed on the base in gold or red enamel, often identify renowned studios or artists from the Tokyo or Kyoto regions.

Position Satsuma items as focal decorative accents on sideboards, mantelpieces, or curated shelving. Their rich gilding and intricate hand-painted artwork contrast effectively against neutral backdrops or deep-toned cabinetry.

Clean Satsuma ceramics gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush to remove dust. Avoid using water, detergents, or abrasive cleaners, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage delicate gold leaf decoration.
