Japanese Kyoto Satsuma Vase by Gyokuzan, Late Meiji Period, C. 1890–1900

A finely painted Japanese Satsuma earthenware vase by Gyokuzan (studio name of Chin Jukan XII, 1835–1906), dating to the late Meiji period. This high-quality example displays exceptional precision in raised gilt moriage work and meticulous enamel painting, characteristic of the most refined Kyoto-style Satsuma ware of the era.

Two detailed oval panels depict elegant noblemen and court ladies gathered in conversation against a mountainous landscape with pavilions, trees and distant hills. The figures are painted with minute brushwork under magnification, revealing expressive facial features, layered kimono patterns and sensitively rendered posture and gesture.

Intricate raised gilt and enamel decoration envelopes the surrounding ground, incorporating classic Kyoto textile motifs including shippo (linked circles symbolising harmony), asanoha (hemp-leaf pattern expressing strength), and seigaiha (stylised waves representing longevity). The surface is finished with a beautifully even ivory crackle glaze, enhanced by brocade borders at the shoulder and foot. The base carries a gilt cartouche signature confirming production by Gyokuzan’s esteemed workshop.

Historical Background

Gyokuzan was the studio name used by Chin Jukan XII, a leading figure in the evolution of the Satsuma ceramic industry during the Meiji period. From Kagoshima, Satsuma Province, he supplied finely potted blanks to many of Japan’s most sought-after decorators, including Yabu Meizan and Gyokushu.

His output was exhibited widely at international expositions between 1873 and 1906, greatly contributing to the global prestige of Japanese ceramics. The Gyokuzan mark was in use between 1874 and 1897, placing this vase within the highly desirable golden age of export craftsmanship, when pieces were made specifically for sophisticated Western collectors.

Condition
