Large Meiji Satsuma Warrior Plate, Kyoto, Gilded & Moriage, C.1890–1910
£350 $480 €402
A museum-grade Japanese Satsuma ceramic plate of substantial size and visual impact, produced in Kyoto during the late Meiji period, circa 1890–1910. Executed in the finest Kyoto export tradition, this plate features a commanding scene of samurai warriors — the central figure with sword raised in mid-action — all painted in meticulous polychrome enamel and highlighted with dense moriage (beaded) detail and heavy gilding.
The decoration is framed by a gilt Greek-key border, an uncommon and desirable design element that adds architectural rhythm to the composition. The reverse is unmarked, in line with many Kyoto studio pieces from this era that emphasized dramatic surface narrative over signed attribution. The plate’s ivory crackle-glazed ground and balanced palette exemplify Kyoto Satsuma’s refined aesthetics.
In excellent decorative condition with only minor signs of age: a superficial glaze flaw near the rim (not a structural crack, confirmed via UV), light gold rubbing, and so...me enamel thinning consistent with age. There is no repainting or restoration. The piece is unusually solid and heavy at over 1.1 kg, suitable for wall or cabinet display.
A collector-grade work of Kyoto Satsuma, appealing for its martial subject matter, strong composition, and enduring decorative power.
