Antique Mahogany Dining Chairs. Georgian, Early 19th Century.

18th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A delightful set of six Georgian period mahogany dining chairs which includes one carver chair.

Each chair features a moulded back with pierced supports, a shaped padded seat finished with a blush-coloured florally decorated fabric, and is finished on square tapering legs.

We have noticed that two of the set have reeded external faces to the front tapering legs and also have a deeper moulding to the back support. Please see images for details.

The overall condition of the set is very good, with wear and tear commensurate with their age. A couple of the chairs have had historic repairs to either the legs or the backrests, but they are all in solid condition. Additionally, we have noticed that one chair has a small area where the backrest has been burnt, probably by a candle.

Finally, the absolutely stunning blush-fabric seats are all showing wear, but there is plenty of life left in this beautiful set of Georgian dining chairs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian dining chairs, produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, are recognised for their balanced proportions, fine wood carving, and use of rich hardwoods like mahogany. Design features often include pierced back splats, shaped cresting rails, and square or turned legs.

Early 19th-century chairs were predominantly crafted from dense South American or West Indian mahogany, valued for its strength and rich timber grain. Seats were typically upholstered in damask, velvet, or floral tapestry over wooden frames.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-cut joinery, such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved splat details, and original timber patination. The undersides of the frames often display hand-sawn tool marks and traditional corner blocking.

Georgian mahogany chairs can be paired with a contemporary pale oak or stone dining table to create a balanced contrast. Their classical proportions allow them to suit both traditional dining rooms and eclectic modern spaces.

Preserve antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber finish. Avoid positioning chairs near direct heat sources or intense sunlight to prevent timber movement.
