Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Decorative bird cages became prominent domestic ornaments during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from functional animal enclosures into status symbols and interior accents. By the 1920s, brass cages were crafted with refined wirework and geometric or classical elements suited for period living rooms and conservatories.

Bird cages from this period typically featured drawn brass wire soldered to cylindrical horizontal bands, supported by a sheet brass base tray. Tops were formed into domed structures often capped with turned wooden or cast brass finials and hanging loops.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-soldered wire joins, natural tarnishing or oxidisation in non-exposed crevices, and solid brass components rather than brass-plated steel. Removable slide-out bases, original perches, and period-appropriate wear on hanging apparatus also signal age.

A vintage bird cage can serve as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or window sill. It can also be repurposed as a botanical display filled with potted trailing plants, battery-operated fairy lights, or displayed empty as an architectural focal point.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush between the wire bars. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or water immersion; unlacquered brass can be gently polished with a specialist metal cleaner applied with cotton wool, followed by buffing.
