Set of 3 Apothecary's Boxwood Pill Rounders

18th century
Description

A set of 3 early 19th century boxwood pill rounders. They are turned from a single piece of wood with a raised rim and incised line decoration. Each one is double sided and provides a variety of different sizes.

Pill rounders or finishers were used by apothecaries to round pills after they were made by placing them under the pill rounder which was then moved in a circular motion, applying slight pressure to the pills. They would then be placed in a pill silverer.

They are in good condition for their age with no major damages. They have developed a beautiful colour and patina through years of use. There are some minor knocks and marks and a couple of small splits but nothing detrimental and they display well.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pill rounder, also known as a pill finisher, is a turned wooden tool historically used by apothecaries and pharmacists to shape and finish handmade medicinal pills into uniform spheres.

These medical implements were predominantly turned from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, which provided a smooth finish and high durability resistant to cracking during daily compounding.

Authentic period examples display subtle hand-turned lathe markings, natural patination from historical handling, shallow central recesses, and precise concentric moulding along the outer edge.

Small turned wooden items function effectively as decorative desk accessories, tray accents, or featured items within a glass vitrine or bookshelf curio collection.

Dust the wood gently with a soft dry cloth and occasionally apply a light application of clear beeswax polish, keeping the item away from excess moisture and direct heat sources.
