Gothic Revival Umbrella Stand

19th century
Description

A fine Gothic Revival umbrella stand, beautifully crafted from rich, solid walnut with a deep, warm patina. The tall back features vertical panelling and a row of turned spindle supports, adding height and elegance to the piece. A central turned rail provides support for umbrellas and walking sticks, while the original brass drip tray at the base — naturally aged with use — catches water from wet umbrellas.

The side panels showcase pierced trefoil-style cut-outs, a hallmark of the Gothic Revival aesthetic that flourished in the late 19th century. With its combination of architectural detailing and practical design, this walnut stand is both a functional hallway piece and a beautiful example of Victorian craftsmanship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture incorporates architectural motifs from medieval Europe, such as trefoil and quatrefoil cut-outs, pointed arch shapes, turned spindles, and dark timber panel onwards from the nineteenth century.

Late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century umbrella stands were commonly made from dense hardwoods like oak or mahogany, featuring removable brass or cast iron drip trays to catch rainwater.

Authentic period stands display traditional joinery techniques, natural wood grain patina, original metal insert pans, and architectural detailing typical of nineteenth-century craft techniques.

Position the stand near an entryway, porch, or hallway to store umbrellas and walking canes, providing practical storage while adding historical texture to modern schemes.

Maintain the timber surfaces with regular dry dusting and occasional applications of natural beeswax polish, ensuring standing water is wiped away promptly from the metal tray.
