Description & Notes
A fine and authentic late-18th-century copperplate engraving drawn by J.M.W. Turner and engraved by James Basire, best known for his mentorship of William Blake.
We understand this print forms part of Turner’s early Oxford Series, published for the Oxford Almanack around 1799–1801 and depicting the south view of Christ Church across the meadows.
Printed on period wove paper with a lightly raised plate surface and faint powdery intaglio residue typical of original impressions.
The composition and lettering correspond directly with the institutional examples held by Tate
...Britain (T05919) and the Yale Center for British Art (B1977.14.27042).
This is not a later reprint, but a genuine period engraving from the original copper plate — a historically significant early Turner collaboration with one of the great Georgian engravers.
Condition Report: Fair to good condition for its age. Light age toning and minor handling marks, but the image remains clear and sharp. Please see photographs for full details.
