Antique Turkish Bandirma rug of prayer niche design with a blue ground.
 
Circa 1900.
 
This is a finely woven rug, wool on a fine cotton foundation with white cotton highlights to the pile. The design is based on a prayer rugs, as found in 17th and 18th century Ottoman rugs.
 
The following is quoted from Britannica, ''Panderma (now Bandirma), a town in Turkey on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmora, usually as imitations of Ghiordes prayer-rug designs. The enterprise was begun early in the 20th century, perhaps with weavers from Ghiordes, though it is usually described as an Armenian establishment''.
 
The rug has a blue field with s central floral column leading to the mihrab, the blue field is edged with flowering carnations. The border is very well drawn and of a classic floral design.
 
The rug is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile. The rug is of fine weave.
