Vintage Oval Mahogany Wall Mirror with Inlaid Detail C.1910s Bevelled Glass

1900 - 1920
Description

Free delivery to mainland UK only.

This very large and elegant vintage oval wall mirror dates from around the 1910s and is beautifully crafted with a solid mahogany frame and subtle boxwood inlay detail around the edge. The bevelled mirror glass catches the light beautifully and remains clear and bright, this is very well preserved for its age, although there is a scratch of a few cm's to the centre right. The back retains its original wooden panel, with a sliver missing to the very bottom, and hanging chain, showing honest surface wear consistent with early century craftsmanship. The fact the backing is solid wood is indicative of the high quality of this product.

The mirror’s smooth, curved shape and fine wood grain make it a timeless and versatile piece — perfect for adding warmth and understated sophistication to a hallway, bedroom, or dressing area. It also works wonderfully as part of a gallery wall or above a console table, blending easily with both period and modern interiors.

A refined and well-proportioned example of post-war British design, this mirror combines quality materials with restrained elegance. Its simplicity and craftsmanship give it enduring appeal, ideal for anyone seeking authentic vintage decor with a touch of mid-century style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian wall mirrors from the early 20th century typically feature refined timber frames, lighter profiles than earlier Victorian designs, and subtle decorative elements such as fine string inlay or marquetry.

Mirrors from this era were commonly crafted using rich hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with boxwood or satinwood stringing, and fitted with heavy bevelled glass plates.

Authentic pieces generally display natural age-related patination on the timber, hand-bevelled edges on the glass, and original wooden panel backings secured with period fixings.

Positioning an oval mirror horizontally above a hallway console table, fireplace mantel, or sideboard introduces warm wood tones and reflects natural light across contemporary living spaces.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood grain; ensure glass cleaners are sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to protect the surrounding inlay.
