Museum-quality matched pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases from Japan’s late 19th–early 20th century. The deep night-blue ground is covered with warm gold and hand-painted enamels; the decoration is slightly raised to the touch, giving a luxurious “jewelled” surface. Each vase is divided into four panels. On the main panels you see the Japanese goddess of compassion (Kannon) surrounded by saintly followers with halos; on the other sides — quiet temple landscapes with pines, water and distant hills. This is classic Kyoto Satsuma made for the Western market at the height of the Meiji era: rich colour, fine detail, strong presence in an interior. True matching pairs of this size, with bright original gilding and clean surfaces, are now hard to find and hold their value well.
