Museum-quality Pair Of Kyoto Satsuma Moriage Vases, Meiji C.1900 — Heavy Gilt, Religious & Landscape Panels
£1,500 $2,023 €1,721
Museum-quality matched pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases from Japan’s late 19th–early 20th century. The deep night-blue ground is covered with warm gold and hand-painted enamels; the decoration is slightly raised to the touch, giving a luxurious “jewelled” surface. Each vase is divided into four panels. On the main panels you see the Japanese goddess of compassion (Kannon) surrounded by saintly followers with halos; on the other sides — quiet temple landscapes with pines, water and distant hills. This is classic Kyoto Satsuma made for the Western market at the height of the Meiji era: rich colour, fine detail, strong presence in an interior. True matching pairs of this size, with bright original gilding and clean surfaces, are now hard to find and hold their value well.
Technique and origin: Satsuma ware (fine cream body with the typical fine crackle), heavy gold and coloured enamels on a dark ground, slightly raised “moriage” details; painted red workshop mark “Kyo” (Kyoto) under each ba...se. Very good antique condition: fine age crackle as made, minor rubbing to high points only, no structural damage seen.
Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.
